Reading this on your smart phone? Did you notice that we now have a version formatted especially for viewing on mobile devices? (Let me know what you think: I can't test it... yet.)

We are also looking for a few teens (well, anyone aged 11-18) who would be willing to help plan the summer reading program for 2012. The teen theme is "Own the Night", and we have some ideas for programs... but we really want your input. The advisory/planning group will meet once before mid-January, and then again in March or April, and maybe a final meeting in May. Call or email the library if you'd like to help.

And while I've got your attention... what is the best way to get your attention? Email? Texting? Phone calls? Blog? Snail mail? Facebook? Give us some feedback. Thanks!!!

Summer Reading... some are not.

Hey teens! If you've been keeping a log of the books you've read this summer, don't forget to bring it to the Library when you come. We will check off what you've read so far and add it to the tally. We've got a long way to go if Mrs. D is going to kiss a pig.

I hope you've been enjoying the "Teen Time" activities on Thursday nights. This coming week (Aug 4) we will be doing family trees. Bring names and birth dates of your siblings, parents, and grandparents (and great grandparents if you know them). We will begin to fill in a pedigree chart and family group sheet, and I'll share some tips on searching for your ancestors.

Summer Reading Video winners announced

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) has announced the winners of the “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge 2011. The Teen Video Challenge is a national competition for teens to get involved with reading and their public library's summer reading program. Winning videos were selected at the state level to be recognized as an official “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge winner for 2011.

This video competition represents a new approach to involve teens in promoting summer reading and public libraries with a focus on the CSLP 2011 slogan, “You Are Here.” Twenty states participated in the “Challenge” for this inaugural year and each selected one winning video to be named an official CSLP “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge winner for 2011.

The winners were announced on April 8, 2011 during the CSLP Annual Meeting held in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Official CSLP “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge winners were named from the following states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.

To view this year’s winning videos, please visit CSLP’s website at www.cslpreads.org. These winning videos can be used by all teens and all public libraries to promote summer reading nationwide.

The winning videos exemplify the diversity of our country and of the teens that created them. Whether produced by an individual teen, groups of teens, a teen library club, or a teen school group, all exhibit creativity and exemplify quality work on the part of the industrious teen film makers. Many videos use humor or literary references to communicate the “You Are Here” idea. Others use more introspective and informative approaches, incorporating inspirational quotes and original music compositions. Videos were submitted from libraries in communities of 900 people to libraries from larger metropolitan areas. In addition to promoting reading and the “You Are Here” slogan, it is clear from all these videos that teens value their public libraries.

For their hard work and creativity, each winner for this year’s competition will receive a monetary award of $250 and the associated public library will receive $100. The awards can be used as each winner sees fit. Several have already decided to put all the funds towards the improvement of their public library.

New Hampshire's winner is Hannah Crowell, a resident of Plymouth, NH and a student at Plymouth Regional High School. Her public library is Pease Public Library, Plymouth.

Teen Video Challenge

What:

Create a video promoting Summer Reading at the Library this year and you could win $250! Just a short Public Service Announcement, using the theme “You Are Here” could make you the New Hampshire “You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge Winner. One winner can be selected from each state and CSLP member affiliate. Teens across America could see your video. You can also use our downloadable audio “You Are Here” in your video.

Why:

Aside from the $250 the winning team gets and the $100 the winning library gets, YALS (the Young Adult Librarians of NH) and the national Collaborative Summer Library Program want to encourage you to develop your video skills, have fun and encourage others to use your library all summer long. We created this contest for teens to create videos for teens.

How:

1. Go to "You Are Here” Teen Video Challenge 2011.
2. Explore the resource link for art and music ideas in the public domain.
3. Download the optional audio files, “You Are Here”.
4. Create your video.
5. Entitle your video with: You Are Here-NH-Your First Initial & Last Name (same as on Entry Form).
6. Upload your video to YouTube.com.
7. Fill out Model Release form and Entry form.
8. Mail completed forms by March 7, 2011 to :

We had a great time on September 15 talking with author Lea Wait via Skype about her novel "Wintering Well". Some terrific questions were asked, and after the discussion, we enjoyed some anadama bread baked by Olivia Dodd.

Coroner's Inquest Leads to Arrest... and Release.

A Coroner’s Inquest was held at the Dunbarton Public Library on Thursday, July 29 to determine if the death of head librarian Always B. Wright of the Boondocks Public Library was an accident or a homicide. Judge I. B. Cool presided over the proceedings.

Ms Wright was found dead at the bottom of the library stairs shortly before the library opened for business. Four suspects were questioned by Prosecutor U. B. Bad. After much deliberation, the jury of 11 teens decided that Ms Hattie R History, reference librarian and friend of the deceased may have pushed Ms Wright to her death. Ms History was taken into custody by Deputy Tell D. Truth, but before the court could be adjourned, a surprise witness, I. M. Homeless, came forward to tell what really happened.

The cast included Kathleen Murray as Host Opie Winifred, Stevyn Dodd as Deputy Tell D. Truth, Les Hammond as Deputy Bailiff Holden D. Evidence, Norm Roberge as Judge I. B. Cool, David Breault as Coroner U. B. Dead, Mark Kilmister as Prosecutor U. B. Bad, Audra Breault as Children’s Librarian Gilda B. Good, David Conover as Custodian Sam D. Sweeper, Margaret Venator as Reference Librarian Hattie R. History, and Fred Mullen as Book Salesman Do Bee Handsome. Cassie Conover portrayed I. M. Homeless.

The jury consisted of Hudson Arce, Madison Arce, Danny Breault, Arden Brenan, Odessa Brenan, Cassie Conover, Julia Kilmister, Eden McInturff, Moriah McInturff, Bailey Novakoski, and Makenna Philippon.

Coroner’s Inquest at the Library was written by Sharon Lamberson of the Hannibal Public Library, Hannibal, Missouri. Our production was directed by Nancy Lang and Andrea Douglas.

Have a skill you'd like to share with others? Want to learn a new craft or skill?

Join us for "For Teens, By Teens" a new series of programs at the Dunbarton Public Library. Once a month or so, someone will share a craft or skill with other teens. Talk to Mrs. Lang if you'd like to lead a program.

The next program is Tuesday, January 12, at 4:00 p.m. Come learn some new jewelry making techniques from Cassie Conover. More details will be available after the holidays.

Interested in Babysitting?

We will be offering a Red Cross Babysitting class on Wednesday, August 19, from 9am to 12pm. The program is open to those 11 and older who would like to learn the basics of safe sitting. Cost is $50, payable to the American Red Cross--Granite Chapter, and includes course materials and a wallet card certificate of completion.

The class covers safety issues and basic child development, as well as tips for setting up a babysitting business.

Pre-registration is required! Call or email the Library TODAY to sign up.

Voting for the Great Stone Face Book Award is taking place now through Saturday, April 18! Readers in grades 4 to 6 are eligible to vote (once) for their favorite from the list of 25 nominees. Votes can be submitted at the Dunbarton Elementary School library OR at the Dunbarton Public Library.

Older students can submit votes for the Isinglass Teen Read (grades 7 & 8) or the Flume Teen Readers' Choice (grades 9-12) at the Dunbarton Public Library... also due by April 18.

Three projects will be offered: a mini-book/journal/scrapbook, locker magnet, and coasters for your drinks. Vacation/Holiday Games and Crafts

GAME DAY

If too much turkey has you feeling a bit bored the day after Thanksgiving, get your game on @ the library! We'll be open 10 am to 4 pm on Friday, November 28 for drop in games for ages 10 and up. The PS2 will be set up, we've got 16 games for it and enough controllers for 4 to play at a time... or you can bring your favorite game. There will be a few board games on hand as well. And some snacks!

CD Crafts

Join us on Tuesday, December 30 at 4 pm to make some cool stuff out of old CDs. Choose to make a mini-book, locker magnets, or a set of coasters. We'll supply the CDs, decorative supplies and directions... you bring wallet-sized pictures of your friends, family, or pets. For ages 10+.

Teen Read Week will be celebrated October 12-18... and we need your help!

Did you take any great pictures this summer or since school started? Would you like to show them off? Our picture display is currently empty, and we'd love to fill it with YOUR pictures! Bring them to the Library by Tuesday, October 14, and we'll display them for about a month.

The National Theme for Teen Read Week is "Books With Bite!" and I've put together a list of some books you might enjoy. Pick up you copy when you drop off your pictures, or any time through October 31. The "Books with Bite" list includes books on vampires and other monsters, food and eating, and computer bytes.

Also.... if you'll be around the day after Thanksgiving, we'll have the PS2 set up for drop in games during regular library hours.

Thursday, August 28, 6:30 p.m.: Video Game Night. We had a PlayStation3 console and a dozen or so PS2 games donated, so come help us test them out. We'll set up the projector for a big screen effect, so you can watch your friends too!

The Fun Has Just Begun!

We're two weeks into the summer reading program. Have you finished any books yet?

Bring your reading log with you when you visit the library... we're counting books as we go. Add a penny to our big graduated cylinder for each book read. Each book/penny represents 20 kilometers... can we get to Fremantle by the end of the program? That's about 18,640 km... or 932 books.

Teen Time started last night. We watched "Kangaroo Jack," a fun story of two guys who get caught up with the mob and sent to deliver $50,000 to a guy in Australia. They lose the money by putting it in the pocket of a jacket that then gets put on a seemingly dead kangaroo... but "Jack" isn't dead, and soon hops away with the cash. Can they find him before "Mr. Smith" catches up with them? The DVD is available at the Library if you missed the program.

Next week is our Boomerang night. Jeremy Levine is coming from Vermont to show us how to throw 'rangs. He makes boomerangs and has participated in competitions. Everyone will get a chance to try throwing a boomerang, and Jeremy is bringing some extras to sell. If it's raining, we'll be cooking in the Library, and Jeremy will come on August 7.

Everything you need for the summer reading program is on the "Kids' Space" page of the Library website, down in the lower left corner. Resources include the reading logs, Read Across Australia challenge, Australian Trivia Quiz, Calendar of Events, and the Teen Read brochure.

Don't Forget: We are collecting postcards, letters, and other items to send to the folks at the Fremantle Public Library. Write a bit about your favorite foods, books, a typical school day, what you like to do for fun, or even things you like or don't like about living in Dunbarton. We'll be sending the box within a few weeks, so bring your item(s) by July 19 if you can.

Also, don't forget the Aboriginal Mask Contest. Sample patterns are available at the Library, or you can design your own. Entries are due July 16th!

The Summer Reading Program, G'Day for Reading has officially begun! Start recording your books and make plans to attend the teen programs in July.

You can download the Teen brochure here, or pick up a copy at the Library. Read your way across Australia by selecting books from the challenge and coloring in the map as you read. Reading logs are available at the Library or can be downloaded and printed here.

So what's on the schedule? All Teen programs are Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.

July 10: Movie Night with an Australian flare. (Bring your favorite rated G or PG and we'll vote on which to see.)
July 17: Boomerangs. Come learn how to throw a boomerang from professional Jeremy Levine of Vermont. Adventuresome adults are also invited. Rain date: 8/7.
July 24: Tie-Dye: Bring a pre-washed, 100% cotton item to dye. T-shirts & pillow cases are popular items.
July 31: Ted Johnson helps us create moving sculptures.
August 7: Cooking without a stove or oven. Learn how to make some delicious treats in the microwave! (and maybe an electric skillet)
August 14: Fred Mullen introduces us to the fun of orienteering.

The Summer wraps up with a Beach Party on Friday, August 15... be sure to turn in your log if you want a certificate and prize!

Thank you to every one who voted in the Summer Programs poll! The most popular program was Tie-dying, which we will put into the summer schedule. Other high vote getters included "The Game of Life" tournament, a barbecue, and trivia and movie nights. We'll do our best to fit those into the summer schedule as well.

The Summer Reading Program will kick off on Thursday, June 26, with a live animal program by Wildlife Encounters. They are planning to bring a baby (joey) Wallaby along with other interesting animals. Weekly programs will begin after July 4th and run through mid-August. More details on summer programs will be coming later this month.

As soon as we set the story time schedule for the younger kids, we'll be looking for volunteers to help with their crafts. Some weeks we'll need help preparing supplies, other times we will need help during the craft. A sign up sheet will be at the library once we know exactly what and when we'll need help.

Mystery Solution

Congratulations to Matt for successfully solving the Teen Tech Week mystery! I know a few others were working on it, but only Matt submitted an answer. Guess we'll just hold on to the extra prizes for some other contest.

And the answer is:

Arline Montgomery Little was kidnapped. Charles Little's pocket watch was found at the scene. The dragons were guarding Mrs. Little, who was sitting on the drawbridge of the castle in the new mural. And the first clue was posted on February 26 at 12:25 AM.

I hope you all had fun with the mystery. I'd love to hear what you thought about it. Were the clues too easy or too hard? Not enough to be done online? Did you like the "tech tips"?

Today's Tech Tip: Want to know what the weather's like in Florida without waiting for the sports report of the evening news? Or what this weekend's snow storm is going to dump on us? There are several sites you can check for local forecasts. The Weather Channel hosts www.weather.com. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) posts all their weather related alerts at www.noaa.gov. And you can check what the meteorologists at Channel 9 TV think by visiting www.wmur.com.

You can also add a weather widget to your website, home page, desktop or browser. Do a "Google" search for "weather widget" to find one you like.

What's a widget? It's a little bit of code that adds content to your website or blog. It usually involves retrieving information from some other site and putting it onto your page. Like this one from the Weather Channel:

Hoards of treasure? Hmm.... what might be guarding treasure (and a kidnap victim)? Could it be something recently painted on the wall?

Tech Tip: Safety on the Internet

To avoid stalkers and predators, don't post your full name, part of your real name and your picture, your address, phone number, or school information all in the same place. Be suspicious of anyone who asks a lot of personal questions, or who seems to have exactly the same likes and dislikes as you. If you post a picture, check it carefully for any identifying information: school name on your t-shirt, background items like a car license plate, street signs, etc.

A Library Kidnapping: Clue #1

In celebration of Teen Tech Week, I will be posting clues to our very first virtual mystery. Some clues may require a visit to the Library to decipher, but don't worry... all evidence will be left in place until March 8. Clues will be posted from today through March 1... bring your solution to the Library during regular hours March 4-8 to claim your prize.

Mystery Clue #1:

Someone's been kidnapped! The sweet little girl in the center front row of the 1942 school picture is missing! Who is she? Find the picture in an old Town Report or in a frame by the Internet Computer at the library.

A Library Kidnapping Mystery

During vacation week, "teens" ages 11-19 should check the Dunbarton Teens blog for clues to the Mystery Kidnapping. One new clue will be posted each day the Library is open (Tuesday through Saturday). Read the clues, solve the mystery, and report your findings to the Library during Teen Tech Week (March 2-8). Prizes will be awarded to everyone who submits a solution.

Note to Parents: this contest requires teens to access and read a blog posted by the Library staff. Registration is not required, and no personal information will be collected via the web. Teens must come to the Library to claim their prize.

January Programs You Might Enjoy

Weather Wonders: On Thursday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m., Meteorologist Josh Judge will be visiting the Library! Josh will present a behind the scenes look at how they predict the weather and prepare to present it on television.

National Handwriting Day: On Tuesday, January 22 at 6:30 p.m., the Library will celebrate National Handwriting Day with a calligraphy workshop. Anyone ages 12 and older is welcome to register. Materials will be provided for the class, but feel free to bring your own calligraphy pen or markers if you have them.

Coming Soon: Look for a movie or game tournament during the February school break, and a special "spot the icon" contest coming soon.

Book Awards: Lists of the nominees for the Flume Teen Reader's Choice Award (grades 9-12), the Isinglass Teen Read Award (grades 7&8), and the Great Stone Face Award (grades 4-6) will be available by the end of this month. Voting for all three awards takes place during National Library Week, April 13-19.

Holiday Reminders

The Drop-In Crafts will be available Friday and Saturday, December 21 & 22, since the Library closed on the 20th.

We will be closed on Tuesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday.

Chris Chagris will present a "Fun with Electricity" workshop on Thursday, December 27 at 4:00 p.m. for ages 8 to 13. Sure to be a shocking experience, the history of electricity will be explored and electric gizmos will be demonstrated. Call the Library at 774-3546 to sign up.

Also on December 27 we will have a special showing of "The Blob" just for teens. Show starts at 6:30. Blobs of ice cream will be served.

Thursday, December 27 4-5 p.m.: Chris Chagaris presents an Electricity workshop for ages 8 to 13. Sure to be a shocking experience!

Thursday December 27 6:30-8:00 p.m.: Special showing of THE BLOB just for teens! It's indescribable, indestructible, nothing can stop it, and it thrilled your parents or grandparents when it was first released in 1958. Classic sci-fi schlock, THE BLOB is a cult classic for lovers of now hokey looking special effects. Note: The Library disclaims any and all responsibility for heart attacks, fainting, or other damage to the nerves as a result of watching THE BLOB.

Ben, Rob, and Lauren rocked the Library on Friday, October 26 during our first Guitar Hero "tournament". Since we know a bunch of folks ditched the gaming night in favor of the high school dance, we've scheduled a second chance for all you Rock Star wannabees. Join us on Saturday, November 10, beginning at 1 p.m. for a rocking good time.

If you have your own guitar controller, please bring it along. And if anyone has the Dance Dance Revolution game and controls, I'm trying to scare up a second TV for even more fun. And if we get enough interest, this could become a monthly event.

Snacks will be served, so come show us your best moves!

Laugh Out Loud @ Your Library

Laughing is good for your health... it makes you feel good, increases metabolism, burns calories, and strengthens your immune system. What better time to laugh than during Teen Read Read, October 14-20! Stop by the Library for books full of humor, graphic novels, and more to get you laughing out loud.

Join us on Thursday, October 18 at 6:30 p.m., when songwriter Barry Palmer of Nashua shares his work, and explains the songwriting process. Barry says everyone has a song inside them, and he'll help us find those inner songs. Palmer's song "Live Free or Die" was recently made an official state song for New Hampshire. Refreshments will be served.

Save the Dates! Teen Read Week and More

Teen Read Week is October 14 to 20. Join us on Thursday, October 18 when songwriter Barry Palmer of Nashua visits. Barry will share his music and discuss the songwriting process during the 6:30 p.m. program. Barry's song "Live Free or Die" was recently made one of the official state songs of New Hampshire. In 2003, The Jordanaires recorded and produced Barry's first demo CD, "Saturday's Child". His second CD, "Pure Country" was also recorded by The Jordanaires. A lover of the classic legends of country-western music, Barry has written over 50 songs, ranging from country and bluegrass to songs reflecting his deep personal spirituality.

Dunbarton will be participating in The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads Fahrenheit 451 during October. On Thursday, October 11, Dave Mackey will speak on "Surveillance in the Post 9-11 World". Then on Tuesday, October 23, join us for a discussion of Fahrenheit 451. Published in October, 1953, Ray Bradbury's tale of a future in which books are burned and most folks prefer watching their interactive television over interacting with live people is still relevant today.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads Fahrenheit 451 is a project of the Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library in partnership with the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

For those who may have missed the email: We had to move the "Games" night to this week. The Glass program will be rescheduled, probably for August 9. August 2 will be a bridge building challenge.

Also, the potluck supper on August 15 is being canceled. We will be having a program by the New Hampshire Audubon Society on Friday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m., followed by dessert and Summer Reading Awards.

Reading Challenge Alternative & Program Updates

For those of you who want an alternative to any of the state challenges: You may substitute a book set in the state for 3 Book Bucks.

Please remember to bring your log with you when you visit the library. We are adding tokens to a jar for each book read, and will also give you the Book Bucks you have earned. You can also earn Book Bucks for visiting the library (one per day), bringing a friend to a program, or helping with story time for the younger children.

Can't make it for the story times? We have a few other volunteer jobs that can earn you Book Bucks...please ask!

This week's project: Scratch Art photo frames. Next week: Glass.

Oh, yeah...Harry Potter #7 will be out this Saturday! 756 pages long.

Summer Fun

The summer reading program begins on June 22, with a special concert by the Purple Finches Chorus from the Concord Community Music School. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at the Congregational Church.

Our teen program begins on July 12, is for ages 11 and up, and will meet on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. We are challenging teens to meet our 50 States Challenge...read a different type of book for each state.

Getting Ready for the summer...

We need some suggestions (or donations) for prizes for the summer reading program.

The poetry program with Joyce Ray, scheduled for April 12, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, April 16.

Don't forget the Poetry Workshop with Glenn Currie on Saturday, April 14 for ages 8 to 13. That starts at 10:30 a.m. Registration is suggested.

The Russian Dolls program on April 24 is filling fast. Please call the library if you plan to come. There is a FEE for this program of $10 to $55 dollars, depending on which doll set you choose.

April Programs for Teens and Tweens

You might be interested in a couple of programs scheduled for April at the Library.

On Thursday, April 12 at 7 p.m., Dunbarton poet and author Joyce Ray will share some of her poems.

On Saturday, April 14, 10:30 a.m. to Noon, celebrate New Hampshire's Children's Poetry Day with a workshop lead by Glenn Curie for ages 8 to 13.

And on Tuesday, April 24, 6 to 9 p.m., Marina Forbes will lead a workshop on painting Russian nested dolls. Families can work as a group on a 3 or 5 doll set, or individuals may choose to do just a single doll.

Tamora Pierce is coming to Concord

Fantasy author Tamora Pierce will be at the Concord City Auditorium on Sunday, April 15, 2007. She will be speaking about "The Reality in Fantasy" as part of the New Hampshire Humanities Council's "Speculate" book discussion series. A book signing will follow the program.

The program begins at 2:00 p.m. and admission is free. If you'd like to go as a group (car pooling or just meeting there) and sit together, please let Mrs. Lang know by April 1, so we can reserve a block of seats.

And stop by the Library for a free sparkly bookmark with all the information on the program.

Want to know what the final Harry Potter book will be called? If you visit JK Rowling's website (www.jkrowling.com), you can play a game of hangman to learn the answer.

Of course, you first have to find the game...one of the passkeys on her desk leads to a door, and window, and a mirror. Find the hidden decorations, clear away the cobwebs, and discover the secret key among the wind chimes. Unlock the door and open the present to play hangman.

If you don't want to go to all that trouble (it's a lot of fun, and there's other interesting stuff on the site)...

Book 7 will be called "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".

Holiday Hours

The Library will be closed on Saturday, December 23 and Saturday, December 30. We'll be open our regular schedule December 26-29, if you have homework over the vacation.

Don't forget the Game Day program Friday, December 29, starting at 4 pm for those age 12 or grade 6 and older. We're getting pizza to eat, and have loads of fun games to play!

December 7th Holiday Concert: Theo (Theophilus Nii Martey), the founding member of Akawaaba, an African drum and dance ensemble, will introduce the audience to drums and stories. A talented artist who was born and raised in Ghana, Theo has taught and performed in Ghana, England and the United States. Music lovers of all ages are invited to this special evening.

We're still looking for nominations for the Flume Award from students in grades 9 to 12. Deadline to nominate for the 2008 award is December 29.

Events for teens

Join us for the movie tomorrow (11/22) at 2 p.m. While our license doesn't allow us to post the title of the film, I can give you some hints...the plot involves a golden ticket and a factory tour, Johnny Depp stars, and it's based on a children's book by Roald Dahl. (If you can't guess, you can call the library for the answer.)

Get ready for some FUN! December 28 is TEEN NIGHT at the Library. We'll begin around 6:30 with some FOOD, play some games, discuss what you're reading, and end with a movie. Flume Award Nominations

Nominations are cuurently being accepted for The Flume: NH teen Reader's Choice Award. Students in grades 9 to 12 are invited to nominate fiction and nonfiction books that appeal to teens, with publication dates from 2004-2006.

To nominate a book, grab a form at the Library (you'll need title, author, and copyright/publication date to complete it) or submit your nomination online at: http://www.nashualibrary.org/YALS/FlumeNominationForm.htm The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2006 for the 2008 award.

The first Flume Award was presented in 2006 to Dan Brown for The DaVinci Code. Voting takes place in April of each year from nominations received from teens and reviewed by young adult librarians.

Hit the Road

Hit the Road, by Caroline B. Cooney

Ready for some laughs? Brittany Anne Bowman (Brit to her friends) has had her license for 11 days. Do her parents leave the car for her while they're off to Alaska? No, the car will be parked in the airport parking lot for the next two weeks. Brit will be parked at her 86-year-old grandmother's house, dependant on Nannie's aids for transportation. Because Brit's mother cut up Nannie's license and sold her caddy.

Nannie, of course, has other plans. Within minutes of Brit's parents' departure, a GMC Safari van pulls up. Nannie has rented the van, with a plan to pick up Flo on Long Island, then head up to Massachusetts to kidnap Aurelia from the secure ward of the nursing home her son stuck her into. After changing Aurelia's will to leave everything to their alma mater, they will pick up Daisy and arrive in Maine in time for their 65th college reunion. Nothing can stop Buttermeres, after all.

Or can they be stopped? Nannie can't see over the steering wheel. Brit's too young to legally drive a rental car. Nannie's nosy neighbor calls the police about the torn up lawn. Then there's the highway...and the ferry...and Aurelia's greedy son...and the police...

Will "The Girls" make it to the reunion? Will Brit still have a license by the time her parents get home?

Another Writing Contest

This October, HarperTeen is bringing you the ultimate teen writing contest—HarperTeen FanLit™!

You will be able to submit your writing, vote, and get writing tips from HarperTeen editors and authors. In addition to reviews and ratings from peers, submissions will be judged by a panel of authors including Meg Cabot, Rachel Vail, Jodi Lynn Anderson, and Laura Ruby.

At the end of each week, the highest rated chapter will be added to the short story.

Letters About Literature Contest

The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library will once again be participating in Letters About Literature, a writing contest for readers in grades 4 through 12 sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores.

To enter, students are asked to write a personal letter to an author, explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves. Young readers can select authors, living or dead, from any genre-fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic. A panel of New Hampshire judges will select the top essayists in the state in each of the three competition levels: Level I for children in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8; and Level III, grades 9 through 12. State winners will advance to national competition and the first-place winner for New Hampshire at each competition level will receive a $100 cash prize. Six national winners will each receive an expenses-paid trip to the nation's capital to read their letters during the National Book Festival in the fall of 2007. In addition, the national winners will each receive a $500 Target gift card redeemable at any Target Store or target.com.

Deadline for entries is December 8, 2006. I'm listening to Magic Street by Orson Scott Card, one of the many titles available to download with our new Downloadable Audiobook Service. Mac Street was found in a plastic grocery bag near a drain pipe when he was only hours old. Adopted by the neighborhood nurse, he knows he's different. His 'cold dreams' show him the deepest desires of people in his neighborhood...and all too often, those dreams come true in the worst possible way. Who is this homeless man the professor refers to as "The Bag Man", Cecil calls "Mr. Christmas", and Mac thinks is really Puck, the trickster fairy? Who is he really? And what's with the motorcycle lady?
